About The Event

The Slovak Chamber of English Teachers (SKA)’s 4th annual ELT conference – The Real Deal: Authentic Teaching and Learning – will be taking place Friday and Saturday,  28 and 29 September 2018, at the Faculty of Arts at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, Slovakia.

The theme of this year’s conference is ‘The Real Deal‘ focusing on authenticity in how (and what) we teach and learn.  We and our students are constantly bombarded with information these days that is often not based in fact or reality. Whether via dubious online sources, viral social media posts, or official press conferences, one is never quite sure what to believe. This is true in fields ranging from politics to health, but for this conference, we will focus on how it relates to education and learning (although the content we use to teach the vocabulary and grammar can be from any field).

We’re looking forward to hearing from colleagues from around the country and the Central European region on how to teach on the values and democratic principles that our students need foundations in. We, of course, look forward to learning more about teaching the skills our students so desperately need: critical reading, critical thinking, and writing skills, as well as job skills. And then there’s what science has to say about how our students’ brains – and our own – learn. Of course, there will be workshops on the language we teach – this English that has twice as many speakers who learned it as a foreign or second language than those who speak it as their mother tongue. Which authentic English are we teaching? Finally, there’s research-based ELT methodology and tried-and-tested ELT practice, as opposed to the latest teaching fad or technology that everyone says we need.

We think we’ll have an amazing line-up of practical workshops for all the ages we teach!
